Molding Time!

On the way to discover the secret of making Labu Sayong.
Picturesque view of Padang Rengas, an important landmark to lead us to Labu Sayong.

Bengkel Labu Sayong Kampung Paya Lintah

Look out for the entrance where replicas of Labu Sayong are displayed along the roadside before entrance.

Paya Lintah Labu Sayong workshop is located in the Kuala Kangsar area and has been operating since the year 2000 until now.  This workshop is owned by Mrs. Saidah Binti Pandak Sidek and her family as well.

Their workshop provided several products of Labu Sayong and services such as ‘Labu Air’, lights, potpourri, egg trays, jewelry or gifts for weddings and study tour as well.

The owner’s daughter of Labu Sayong workshop,
Miss Noor Sila Kharuddin.

Varieties of Labu Sayong!

Different types and size of Labu Sayong that available at here!

Process of making Labu Sayong.

Another complete process chart for making the Labu Sayong.

The clay used is free of chemical residues which is edible but contain foreign object such as sands, leaves, grass and pebbles.

Process of mixing the raw clay material.

The mixture machine that contains the mixture of water and clay.

Miss Sila is putting the raw clay into the mixture for the right proportion for making the pottery.

The mixture’s concentration cannot be too dilute or too concentrate, depending on the ratio of the raw clay and water which needed to be estimate as it does not have a fixed measurement.

She was taking the mixture to be filtered from the mixture machine into another barrel.

The ready mixed mixture have to be filtered out into another barrel before it can be used because the mixture might still contain tiny foreign object in it.

Tiny foreign object which was inside the ready mixture that has been filtered out.

The mixture is then left for at least one day before it can be readily use to make Labu Sayong. Thus, early preparation and much time is needed to be spent on the preparation process itself.

The real clay mixture was poured into the the mold which then was used to shape different design of Labu Sayong.

The real clay mixture have to continue to be poured into the mold constantly so that the mixture won’t dry faster till the whole mold was fill in with the mixture.

The sample of the clay that is partially set-the texture is like plasticine, without chemical substances inside.

The real clay mixture which is ready be used after be dried. Miss Sila said that old mold would take 3 hours to dry and set properly, while new mold will take half an hour to set.

Besides, it’s also depending on the weather to make sure the Labu Sayong are dry enough and ready on the next process.

The remaining of the clay mixture was poured out again to make sure the layer inside the mold was equally thick on the inside.

The mold of Labu Sayong!

The Labu Sayong's caps.

The remain of the cap mold is scrapped out so that it can be shape properly.

The differences between the mold where the colour which is dark one is haven’t dry and the light colour is the one after dry under the sunlight.

The large size of Labu Sayong which is used for placing in the different type of Labu Sayong before undergoing the baking process.

This was the old method of making Labu Sayong. It takes longer time to finish at most 2 of Labu Sayong per day.

They are still using manual machine to conduct the decoration process as it is still impossible for machine to do this process .

Miss Sila was demonstrating to us how to start on decorate the Labu Sayong.

The tools that used for the decoration of Labu Sayong.
The sponge, plastic bag and ‘batu sungai’ for smoothen the surface and cover the surface of the sand with water.

Types of colour that used for the decoration part of Labu Sayong. The engobe (colour) is an organic colour mixture which didn’t contain any toxic and harm materials which is safe for consuming.

Isn't it AWESOME?!
A creative fine art by Miss Sila by using the tools to create the design on the Labu Sayong.

She was showing on how to carve leave design on the Labu Sayong by using the tools available.

Leave carved design. Isn't it nice?

Stamping tool that was used for stamp design on the Labu Sayong.

 STAMPING TIME!
She was demonstrating how to stamp it nicely on the surface of Labu Sayong.

Done! A perfect finishing of Labu Sayong from Miss Sila before it is ready to be bake.

After the Labu Sayong was done, we were given the courtesy to encarve our name on it.

Go Go Perak engraved onto the Labu Sayong!

The mold of Labu Sayong that was given by Miss Sila to each of us for making our own CREATIVE Labu Sayong! Appreciate it SO MUCH!

After the coloring and decoration by our group members! Does it look NICE??

Combination of our CREATIVE design on Labu Sayong that we had made on.

A large oven which is used for the baking process of Labu Sayong.
The baking process consumes up to 12 hours continuously on constant fire so that the Labu Sayong can be rigid.

From what we get from Miss Sila, if the baking process exceeds the estimated time, the colour of Labu Sayong will change to lighter color.

Combination of the photo taken at there due to the limitation of time for waiting the whole process making of Labu Sayong.

BabyYunna & SaSaChan: The place is not hard to reach as the guided map shows noticeable and clear land marks. However drivers must take notice of the exits from toll to Paya Lintah as there are a few traffic lights. Visitors should use the Taiping exit to access to Paya Lintah.=D

Marcus: We went there from Kampar as well. It took us around one and a half hour =)
